What is CERT?
The CERT program instructs community members in disaster preparedness and provides a better awareness of hazards that may have an impact on their community. CERT members can help during city functions, such as parades, fairs, concerts, etc. They can also help with emergencies or disasters and assist community members when professional responders are overwhelmed.
The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) program supports local response capability by training volunteers to organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers at the disaster site, to provide immediate assistance to victims, and to collect disaster intelligence to support responder's efforts when they arrive. Following a disaster, community members may be on their own for a period of time because of the size of the area affected, lost communications, and impassable roads.
During the CERT course, participants learn about the hazards they face and ways to prepare for them. CERT members are taught basic organizational skills that they can use to help themselves, their loved ones, and their neighbors until help arrives. Training consists of instruction on topics that include disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster psychology.
How Does The Program Work?
An individual will take a Hands-On Course where they meet weekly for six weeks with an instructor for classroom instruction. At the end of the course, participants will receive a certificate and a backpack with emergency supplies.
